DRSD Luminova White Replacement Dial

The Luminova White Replacement Dial is the base form of the Mark VI — the same physical dial, but without the red lettering applied over it. Understanding this dial is essential for authenticating any serviced 1665.

Dial Overview

This example is a 4.08 Million DRSD fitted with a Rolex Luminova replacement dial installed approximately in 2004. The dial is visually identical to the Mark VI — it is in fact the same dial, but without the red lettering applied. Note the SWISS markings at the base of the dial, which are consistent with late-era Rolex service dial production.

“The printing is noticeably crude and blotted when viewed under a 10x.”

This observation is a critical authentication point. Under magnification, the print quality of the Luminova service replacement dials is clearly distinguishable from the original tritium-era dials, which were produced to a considerably higher standard of printing precision.

Authentication Notes

Any 1665 with Luminova markers has been serviced — the original production dials used exclusively tritium lume. The presence of this dial is not a negative, but it must be disclosed and documented. A watch with a Luminova replacement dial is not an original-dial example.

Under a loupe or 10x loupe, the print quality difference becomes immediately apparent. Original DRSD dials show crisp, clean letterforms with well-defined edges. The Luminova replacement dials show blotting and inconsistency in the printing — a reliable field test for any collector examining a potential purchase.

The SWISS marking at 6 o’clock also serves as an instant marker of the replacement era. Early original dials do not carry this marking in the same position or form as the service replacement versions.
